Drain unblocking in Lisbon, without the guesswork.

Why here

Lisbon buildings block in predictable places

Blockages are rarely random. In this city they cluster around three things: the age of the pipework, the shared vertical stack, and what modern life puts down a drain that was laid in 1955.

Old cast iron and narrow bends

Much of the pre-1980s stock still has cast-iron waste pipes. Decades of scale narrow them from the inside, so the same amount of grease that passes in a new build stops dead in a Graça flat.

The shared stack, not your sink

If your kitchen sink and your neighbour's back up on the same afternoon, the blockage is in the coluna the whole column shares. That is a condomínio matter, and it changes who pays.

Wet wipes and cooking oil

Two things account for a remarkable share of call-outs. Wipes do not break down no matter what the packet says, and cooled cooking oil coats the inside of a pipe like candle wax.

What clearing costs

Unblocking prices people report in Lisbon

A straightforward toilet or sink is at the low end. A machine job on a shared stack, or anything that needs a camera down the pipe first, sits well above it.

By job — what people report paying

  • Unblocking a toilet or sink€35–125
  • Finding and fixing a leak€60–320
  • Pipework in one room · repair€35–350
  • New pipework in one room€200–500

What pushes the number up

Before you call

Five minutes that can save you a call-out

None of this is a substitute for a plumber with a machine, but it does tell you which problem you actually have.

  • Check whether more than one drain is slow. One slow sink is local. Kitchen and bathroom together points at the shared stack, and that is a different call.
  • Look under the sink for the sifão. A bottle trap full of sludge unscrews by hand into a bucket and solves a surprising number of kitchen blockages.
  • Skip the caustic drain cleaner in an old building. It rarely clears a real blockage, it eats aged cast iron, and it makes the plumber's job hazardous.
  • Ask the neighbours before blaming your own pipes. Thirty seconds on the landing can turn a private repair into a building repair.
  • Note whether it gurgles. Air coming back up the drain usually means the obstruction is further down the line than your own waste pipe.
  • Photograph the access point. Whether there is a caixa de visita in the yard, and whether a machine can reach it, decides which plumber to send.
Coverage

Drain work across the metro area

Drain specialists tend to work a radius rather than a postcode, and the machines live in a van. Central Lisbon and the first ring are straightforward; for the Margem Sul and the Sintra line it helps to be flexible about the slot.

Blocked drains

Questions that come up on every blockage

How long does unblocking usually take?

A trap or a toilet is often twenty minutes. A stack blockage with a machine can run to two hours, and if a camera has to go down first, longer. The variable is access, not the blockage itself.

Who pays when the blockage is in the shared column?

Normally the condomínio, because the coluna serves every flat above and below you. Get the plumber to write down where the obstruction was found; without that sentence the administrator has nothing to work with and the bill tends to land on whoever made the call.

Will they need to break tiles or open a wall?

Rarely for a normal blockage. Most work goes in through the toilet, the trap or an existing inspection chamber. Breaking into a wall is a last resort and should be discussed and priced before anyone picks up a chisel.

Is a camera inspection worth paying for?

It is worth it when the same drain blocks repeatedly, when there is subsidence or tree roots outside, or before you spend money on a renovation. For a one-off blockage it is usually an unnecessary extra.

Can I use a plunger on a toilet with a macerator?

No. Flats with a macerating unit behind the toilet need the unit checked rather than forced; plunging can push debris into the blades. Mention the macerator in your request, because not every plumber carries the parts.

The bath drains but smells of sewer. Is that a blockage?

Usually not. A smell without slow draining points at a dried-out or missing trap seal, common in a guest bathroom nobody uses or a flat that has stood empty. Running water into every drain for a minute often fixes it for free.

Not sure what you have

Send a photo down the sink

A photo of the trap, the toilet or the inspection cover tells a drain specialist immediately whether this is a plunger job or a machine job.

Blocked and going nowhere?

Send the address, the floor and what is backing up. That is enough to get the right plumber moving.
